A different kind of brain
ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Despite the name, it's not simply about being unable to pay attention. People with ADHD often have intense focus — just not always on the things they're "supposed" to focus on.
It's a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning it originates in how the brain develops and functions. Research has identified differences in multiple brain networks — including those involved in attention, impulse control, working memory, and emotional regulation. These differences are real, measurable, and not a matter of effort or willpower.
The three presentations of ADHD
According to the DSM-5, ADHD is categorized into three presentations. These aren't rigid boxes — many people shift between them over time, and symptoms look different across ages and genders.
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, frequent distraction, forgetfulness, and trouble following through on tasks. Often missed in children — especially girls — because it lacks the visible hyperactivity.

What causes ADHD?
ADHD is strongly influenced by genetics — research consistently shows it runs in families. Brain imaging studies have identified differences in the structure and activity of certain brain regions, particularly those involved in attention and impulse control. No single cause has been identified; ADHD is understood to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Genetics
ADHD is among the more heritable neurodevelopmental conditions. Having a parent or sibling with ADHD significantly increases the likelihood of also having it, though it does not guarantee it.
Brain development
Studies have identified differences in dopamine and norepinephrine signaling pathways — neurotransmitters involved in attention, motivation, and reward. These differences are associated with ADHD, though the relationship is complex.
Environmental factors
Premature birth, low birth weight, and prenatal exposure to certain substances may increase risk. These are considered contributing factors rather than direct causes, and most people with these risk factors do not develop ADHD.
Common myths, debunked
"ADHD is just an excuse for laziness."
ADHD involves real neurological differences in how the brain regulates attention and motivation. It's not a character flaw — it's a recognized medical condition.
"Only kids have ADHD."
ADHD persists into adulthood for most people. Many adults are diagnosed for the first time in their 30s, 40s, or later — especially women, who are frequently underdiagnosed.
"People with ADHD can't focus on anything."
Many people with ADHD experience hyperfocus — an intense, sustained concentration on things they find genuinely interesting or engaging.
"ADHD is overdiagnosed."
While diagnosis rates have increased, research suggests ADHD remains underdiagnosed in many groups — particularly women, girls, and adults who were missed in childhood.
